GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Thanksgiving tradition, thousands flocked to downtown Grand Rapids for the Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) Turkey Trot Thursday morning.

This year, over 6,500 runners were lined up for the 33rd race—breaking the iconic run's all-time participation record.

Each year, the Turkey Trot 5K raises money to support student athletes at GRPS. Businesses, community organizations and residents raise money through registrations, donations and sponsorships before lacing up their shoes on Thanksgiving Day.

This year, more than $275,000 was raised.

Luke Witvliet of Grandville was the top male finisher, completing the race in 15:07.27. The top female finisher was Alyssa McElheny from Belding, who finished 19th overall with a time of 16:45.6.
