Rachel Reeves risks driving motorists away from electric vehicles and back towards petrol and diesel cars, amid fears that proposed pay-per-mile charges could make EVs unaffordable. Two in five drivers would reconsider purchasing an electric car if new taxes were introduced in the Labour Party's Autumn Budget, according to research.

Nearly half (46 per cent) of respondents are concerned that the suggested 3p per mile levy would make electric vehicles costlier to operate than their fossil fuel alternatives. Meanwhile, just 11 per cent of those polled believe EVs will retain their cost advantage over traditional petrol and diesel vehicles.
