COLUMBUS, Ohio — Police officers have long said that repetition builds skill — and when it comes to handling high-stress, critical incidents, training can make all the difference.

Now, law enforcement agencies across Ohio are turning to virtual reality to sharpen their response.

What looks like a video game headset to most kids is becoming a tool for officers to safely practice responding to dangerous and unpredictable situations.

The technology is already making an impact. During a welfare check in West Jefferson on Sept. 30 just before 4 a.m., officers used de-escalation tactics reinforced through VR simulations.

Body camera footage from the incident captured the exchange.

“Here’s the deal man, we have to make sure you are safe,” an officer is heard saying.
