MINNEAPOLIS — After the shooting of two National Guard members by an Afghan national near the White House, President Trump has vowed to re-examine all Afghan refugees who entered the U.S. during the Biden administration under a program known as Operation Allies Welcome.
Following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan and the rapid takeover by the Taliban in 2021, former President Biden launched that program to provide safety to vulnerable Afghans, including many who had assisted U.S. forces in various roles during years of protracted warfare and had reason to fear retaliation from the Taliban if they stayed.
According to federal authorities, the suspect in this week's National Guard shooting, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, came to the U.S. through Operation Allies Welcome in September 2021 aft
