PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The West Park Church of Christ hosted a Thanksgiving dinner Tuesday night for local military families, offering free food, games and prizes in an effort to provide support — and a sense of home — for those who serve.

Organizers said feeding military personnel and their families is a small way to show appreciation for their service.

“Tonight we are serving Thanksgiving dinner for our local military folks, and then also for our family here at West Park,” said Meghan Chapel.

James Torres, another church member, said giving back is rooted in their faith.

“It’s important because as Christians, we’re blessed throughout the year and we really feel God’s blessing,” Torres said. “So we feel it’s our duty to return that blessing to the community.”
