Players and staff clap the fans before Newcastle's game against Marseille

Marseille have told Newcastle United that they were not at fault after their 2-1 win over Newcastle United in the Champions League this week.

The French club is insisting that they stuck to the guidelines and the plan in place after the match when some fans endured being pepper-sprayed and whacked with batons.

On Thursday, Newcastle complained to UEFA but Marseille have stated they had no complaints from United chiefs in attendance on the night.

A statement from the Veldrome club read: "Olympique de Marseille has read the press release published by Newcastle United FC following the Champions League match played this Tuesday at the Orange Vélodrome.
