With Thanksgiving this week and Christmas not too far behind, many nonprofit organizations are making their year-end appeals. This year, those requests will encompass greater needs as many people in our community face the ripple effects of the government shutdown. Federal employees, including air traffic controllers and military personnel, went partially or completely unpaid for weeks. Meals on Wheels faced a shortage of funds to provide more than 1,800 meals daily to seniors in our seven-county region. SNAP benefits that help 45,000 families in the Savannah metro region have been cut, and headstart child education programs across the state have closed their doors.
