The mayor of a South Jersey town is urging residents to look out for one another after a Thanksgiving traffic stop ended in tragedy.

Penns Grove Mayor La’Daena Londo said Carneys Point officers stopped a vehicle outside a Wawa on Thursday, Nov. 27. When officers approached, the driver stepped out of the car and “in that moment, he took his own life,” the mayor said.

Daily Voice has attempted reaching out to Carneys Point police and Penns Grove police Friday morning.

Londo used the message to urge residents to look out for one another during the holiday season.

“The holidays are deeply challenging for many people. We never truly know what someone is carrying,” Londo said. “Please, check on one another. Reach out to your friends, your loved ones, your neighbors — even the strong ones. You could be the reason someone chooses to hold on.”

“My heart goes out to this man, his family, and all of his loved ones,” the mayor added. “My heart also goes out to the officers. Praying for everyone💔”
