Although the winter solstice and astronomical winter is not until Sunday, Dec. 21 , winter weather is in our midst in northwestern Pennsylvania. Winter solstice marks the start of winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

Keeping your home comfortable during the cold weather season is key to staying healthy and saving money. According to the U.S. Department of Energy , heating your home uses more energy and costs more money than any other system in your home, about 29% of utility bills. The DOE advises to set your thermostat for home heating in the winter to 68 degrees when awake and a little lower when asleep or away from home. Energy.gov reports that setting the thermostat to that optimal 68-degree temperature will help save energy and money while keeping your house comfortably warm.
