Ryan was also a deputy House speaker and regularly presided over debate in the chamber.
Gov. Ned Lamont said the special election will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 13.
The governor is required to issue a writ of special election within 10 days of a seat in the General Assembly becoming vacant. The law also requires a special election to be held exactly 46 days from the day that writ is issued.
