The St. Joseph’s Catholic Secondary School Panthers took home the Battle for the Seaway pre-season trophy for senior boys’ varsity basketball, narrowly beating out the St. Joseph’s High School Jaguars, from Renfrew, Ont.

In a matchup where every pass, dribble, and shot mattered, the Panthers came out on top in the end, winning 55-52.

The Jaguars led through most of the first period, pushing the Panthers into a high-pressure defensive mode.

“All tournament long we’ve been a second-half team,” said coach Pearly Lewis. “We battled early, but as the game went on, we wear down the other teams and just keep grinding, grinding, grinding.”

The Panthers took on more fouls early while they trailed the Jaguars, at times by upwards of 10 points. But, with the leadership of Matt Lewis on the court,
