Katya, the 20-year-old Amur tiger at Seneca Park Zoo, has died, the zoo announced on Friday.
In September, the zoo announced that she was being treated for early-stage chronic kidney disease and severe arthritis.
According to the zoo, her health began to decline rapidly over the past few days, and their veterinary team made the "difficult decision to humanely euthanize her."
Katya was born at the Seneca Park Zoo in 2005 and was the oldest Amur tiger in any Association of Zoos and Aquariums-accredited zoo, according to Seneca Park Zoo officials.
"Amur tigers are critically endangered, with fewer than 500 left in nature. Katya was an incredible ambassador for her species, and she will be deeply missed by our staff, volunteers, and community," Seneca Park Zoo wrote in a statement on the
