One person is dead after a police shooting on I-279 overnight.

Originally, the section of southbound I-279 was shut down due to "police activity," a PennDOT spokesperson confirmed Saturday night.

That closure, between southbound I-279 and the Camp Horne Road (Exit 8) interchange, lasted for hours.

The shutdown occurred because several police agencies were chasing an SUV out of Butler County and into Allegheny County. At some point during the chase, the driver of the SUV lost control and crashed, flipping over at least twice.

Shortly after the crash, shots were fired.

All four occupants of the SUV were taken to the hospital, where one of them later died.
