DETROIT – Michigan State’s misery is over.
The Spartans (4-8, 1-8 Big Ten) snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 38-28 win against Maryland (4-8, 1-8) on Saturday night in the season finale at Ford Field in Detroit.
The program’s longest losing streak in more than four decades came to an end and prevented Michigan State from losing every single Big Ten game in a season for the first time since joining the conference in 1953. Michigan State built a 17-point lead at halftime and held off the Terrapins after the break to pull out its first win since Sept. 13.
Now that the season is over and the Spartans will miss a bowl game for a fourth straight year, all attention turns to coach Jonathan Smith’s job status. Whether he will return for a third season remains unclear amid silence from
