Owners of electric cars (EVs) and plug-in hybrids face new charges under rules announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves.

The radical shake-up will impact those who charge their cars on their driveways or at public charging points.

A new pay-per-mile system will operate and will be the latest tax to hit electric drivers following a massive VED hike earlier in the year.

For EV owners, the rate will be 3p-per-mile, while it will be 1.5p for those who with hybrids.

It's expected motorists will have to declare their annual mileage under the new system.

The average Brit does around 8,500 mile
