During the 1990s, a chilling mystery unfolded in Lisbon when 22-year-old Maria Valentina was discovered lying in a pool of blood behind a shed. She had been strangled, disembowelled and was missing her heart, liver, intestines and genitalia. ‌

Officers launched an investigation, stating they had never encountered a victim left in such a horrific state "in over 30 years". ‌

Detectives identified her as a sex worker known to struggle with substance abuse, but were unable to uncover any information leading to the perpetrator. ‌

Approximately six months later, 24 year old Maria Fernanda was also discovered behind a shed, in identical conditions and missing the same organs, though her chest had also been removed.
