Newburyport’s first motel had just opened and had its first customers, according to the newspaper on this day in 1960. When a couple from a university in New Brunswick, Canada, saw the new sign at the Port Motel, they pulled in. Regrettably, Raymond Coffen, owner and builder, hadn’t completed the eight-room motel.
