City Council will begin deliberations on the 2026 budget Monday morning.

Council will have up to four days to make changes to the proposed budget. As it stands, it will result in a 6.4 per cent property tax increase. The city needs $3.8 billion to cover its expenses, $2.28 billion of which it will have to be raised through property taxes. The city estimates the increase will amount to an extra $49 for every $100,000 of assessed property value.

This is the last of a four-year budget cycle which was marked by steady increases in property-tax rates, following a number of years where tax increases were kept low and even not increased at all in one year as Edmontonians navigated the COVID-19 pandemic.
