1PHILADELPHIA, PA – A 35-year-old woman was critically wounded after police opened fire early Sunday morning in the city’s 25th District.

The shooting happened around 4:11 a.m. on the 9XX block of West Erie Avenue after officers responded to reports of a person armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, they found the woman holding a firearm to the right side of her head.

Police said officers gave multiple commands for her to drop the weapon, but she did not comply.

According to investigators, one officer deployed a Taser that struck the woman but failed to subdue her. She then ran across Erie Avenue and pointed her gun in the direction of officers, prompting two officers to discharge their duty weapons.

The woman was struck multiple times and fell to the ground, dropping her firearm.
