Widening the F.E. Everett Turnpike from Nashua to Bedford is speeding along, as is the construction of the new open-road tolling that will put the easy in the E-ZPass.

The latter cannot come soon enough.

A horrific crash on Nov. 18 was the latest reminder that the toll plaza is more than a nuisance. It’s dangerous for motorists traveling in southern New Hampshire. This time, a driver and passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and two dogs were killed when a Chrysler Pacifica slammed into a southbound concrete barrier during the morning commute.

Crashes at the Bedford tolls have become all too common. In the summer of 2024 alone, there were three crashes in a 44-day stretch at the plaza. One person was killed and four people were injured in those crashes.
