Grief is hard and the holidays make it even harder. Our society does not understand or like grief. In fact, we do a great job of pushing away those who are struggling because their grief makes us uncomfortable. Our culture has branded grief as something that needs to be fixed or managed.
This expectation is further reinforced by assuming those who are grieving will follow a prescribed timeline in “getting over it.” This can cause suffering for those who are grieving as they feel like they are doing it wrong. Feelings of shame or judgment can compound the griever’s experience.
