Salem city councilors on Monday will consider declaring a state of emergency iover a recent uptick in federal immigration and enforcement activity in the city.

The idea of the declaration was brought to the council by Councilor Vanessa Nordyke during a Nov. 24 meeting following hours of public testimony urging city action to protect residents.

At that meeting, the council voted 7-2 in favor of reaffirming the city’s commitment to state sanctuary laws. The council then voted 6-3 on Nordyke’s proposal to direct city staff to draft a declaration of emergency to be considered by council for approval at its next meeting on Dec. 1.
