DETROIT -- Free-agent reliever Ryan Helsley, a pitcher the Detroit Tigers evaluated as both a bullpen option and a possible conversion project, has agreed to a two-year, $28 million deal with the Baltimore Orioles .

Helsley, 31, can opt out of the contract after the 2026 season. He had a phenomenal run as the St. Louis Cardinals’ closer from 2022 to 2025, but he struggled mightily after being traded to the New York Mets at the deadline in July. Even so, he was one of the most sought-after relievers on the market this winter.

The Tigers were reportedly among a handful of clubs intrigued by the idea of converting Helsley into a starter. He came up as a starter after being drafted in the fifth round in 2015, but all 297 of his career appearances have been out of the bullpen.
