The German President is set to visit Coventry this week as part of a state visit to the UK. Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Budenbender will visit Coventry Cathedral on Friday with the Duke of Kent.

They will lay a wreath at the Cathedral ruins, to mark the 85th anniversary of the Coventry Blitz.

More than 500 people were killed and thousands of homes destroyed when Germany bombed the city during the Second World War.

Mr Steinmeier and Ms Budenbender will tour the new cathedral, which was completed in 1962, and join a prayer service highlighting the ministry’s commitment to peace and reconciliation.

Mr Steinmeier’s visit is the first by a German leader in almost 30 years. They will be greeted on Wednesday morning at Heathrow Airport by the Prince and Princess of Wales befor
