The already urgent demand for skilled trades workers will only intensify as Baby Boomers continue to exit the workforce. From 2019 to 2028, Employment and Social Development Canada expects some 700,000 of the four million people who work in the trades will have retired.
The federal and provincial governments are focused on removing barriers to entry, particularly when it comes to women, who represent a critical untapped talent pool. While the numbers are growing, there’s a lot of work to do. Today, women make up just over eight per cent of people employed in the skilled trades.
