The already urgent de­mand for skilled trades workers will only in­tensify as Baby Boom­ers continue to exit the workforce. From 2019 to 2028, Employment and Social Development Canada expects some 700,000 of the four mil­lion people who work in the trades will have retired.

The federal and pro­vincial governments are focused on removing barriers to entry, partic­ularly when it comes to women, who represent a critical untapped talent pool. While the num­bers are growing, there’s a lot of work to do. Today, women make up just over eight per cent of people employed in the skilled trades.
