The founder of an assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland has died by suicide days before his 93rd birthday.
Ludwig Minelli , who headed up the Dignitas right-to-die organization for nearly two decades, died on Saturday from “voluntary assisted dying,” the group said.
Minelli was described by the non-profit as a “pioneer and warrior.” He would have celebrated his birthday this past Friday.
No other details about his death were immediately available, including where he died.
Minelli was a journalist before becoming a human rights lawyer. He founded Dignitas in 1998 to help people end their lives on their own terms.
The group said in a tribute to Minelli that he “stood unwaveringly for his convictions when it came to the protection of fundamental rights and the freedom of citizens.”
