(WXYZ) — In today’s Health Alert, a fast-moving stomach bug is spreading as the holiday season gets underway. New CDC data shows norovirus cases have risen in recent weeks.

Norovirus can be a nasty bug — it inflames the stomach and intestines. It’s the leading cause of vomiting, diarrhea, and foodborne illness in the U.S.

Now, as of the middle of November, nearly 14% of tests were coming back positive for norovirus. That’s more than double what we saw three months ago, when positivity was about 6%. This data comes from the CDC, which collects reports from labs, hospitals, and health departments across the country.
