An enthusiastic crowd of about 30 gathered on Blockhouse Island Friday at 5 p.m., to ceremonially switch on the River of Lights, the holiday show that makes the trees shimmer, flash and dance.
Though cold and biting, it was not a thankless task, as excitement for the event was evident.

Officially open Saturday, each year since its inception in 2019, the event has a soft opening the evening before, providing Brockville Mayor Matt Wren the opportunity to thank the many who make the River of Lights happen.
The dark night stood in contrast with 2024, which was a clear evening with a glowing sunset.
The River of Lights, now in its sixth year, augments like no other event, except the Santa Parade, the Christmas season in the City of The Thousand Islands.
