BATH, BEAUFORT COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - Before North Carolina had cities or even statehood, a quiet town just under a square mile in size was where a piece of the state’s first draft of history was written.
As part of our We the People celebration marking our country’s 250th birthday, WITN’s Gigi Barnett took a trip to visit Historic Bath.
Today, the town of Bath in Beaufort County is quiet and known for its beautiful scenery.
But the town also holds a great deal of North Carolina’s history.
“Bath is kind of a starting point for early North Carolina,” says Historic Bath Interpreter AJ Drake.
That starting point includes several of the state’s “firsts." Bath is known as its first incorporated town, its first port of entry, and is home to some of the earliest structures and conflicts.
