If the Gothams are any indication, One Battle After Another might not have to put up much of a fight to come out on top at the Oscars. Paul Thomas Anderson ’s rollicking, rebellious comedy took home best feature—most likely its first of many such prizes—at t he 35th annual ceremony Monday evening, cementing it as the front runner as awards season officially begins. Given its excellent reviews and box office success, as well as the narrative that Anderson—with 11 Oscar nominations and 0 wins—is overdue for recognition, the question isn’t whether One Battle After Another is the film to beat this award season, but whether any other film can hope to catch up.
