The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is testing technology to help support police and public safety.
This month, police will begin a proof-of-concept testing of facial recognition on body-worn video cameras, known commonly as body cams.
Starting on Wednesday (December 3), up to 50 officers who are using body cams will begin to use facial recognition cameras on their shifts. The test will continue throughout the rest of the month.
If successful, the system will be integrated within the existing database with the aim to make officers aware of individuals with safety flags and cautions from previous interactions with the police. It would also alert officers on individuals who have outstanding warrants for serious crimes.
