COVERT, Mich — Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is celebrating a huge investment into a nuclear power plant in the southwest side of the state.

The United States Department of Energy (DOE) announced the $400 million investment into the Palisades Nuclear Plant in Covert, Mich. on Tuesday. The money will be used to deploy two next-generation small modular reactors (SMRs), capable of generating an additional 600 megawatts of power at the facility.

The Palisades Nuclear Plant is in the process of coming back online after the facility was closed in May of 2022. The plant was closed by its New Orleans-based owner, Entergy Corp. , and was later sold to Holtec International in June 2022.
