DES MOINES, Iowa —

Hy-Vee is teaming up with local first responders to give away 300 free hams in Des Moines, Wednesday. It's part of the "Hams for the Holidays" campaign, now in its eighth year.

The event runs from noon to 2 p.m. at the Iowa State Fairgrounds, or while supplies last. Drivers are asked to enter at Gate 2 off East University Avenue and follow the queue. No preregistration is required. Hams will be given away first-come, first-served.

This is part of a regional effort from Hy-Vee to help families facing food insecurity. Altogether, Hy-Vee is providing 5,000 hams across 20 stores in its nine-state region.
