A new audit shows the city of Daytona Beach has been paying car allowances to 85 employees, including some who auditors say do not regularly travel for work. Car allowances range from $1,300 to $12,000 per year, per person, meaning the city spends about $300,000 annually.
The report lists positions such as the chief financial officer, the budget director, and human resources staff as employees who receive allowances despite being mostly office-based. The auditor goes on to say in his report, "Taxpayer funds may inadvertently subsidize personal commuting or personal transportation."
The auditor also notes another issue, stating, "In some cases, car allowances appear to be issued as part of general compensation based on position or seniority rather than actual job-related travel needs."
