RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - With temperatures expected to fall below 40 degrees, the Salvation Army of Central Virginia is keeping its Chamberlayne Avenue cold‑weather shelter open later than usual this week.

“We want to make sure that the Salvation Army is here to help out those who are in need during these hardships,” Major Christine Kim, commander of the Salvation Army of Central Virginia, said Monday.

The shelter, which operates from mid‑November through April 15, normally opens at 5 p.m. and closes at 8 a.m. the following morning.

On Tuesday, however, the facility remained open until 3 p.m., giving more people time to find a warm place to sleep, relax, eat, and watch television.

The shelter also offers health care resources from medical staff.
