SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - As the holidays approach, local officials are making a call to action for mentors in Sioux Falls.

Sioux Falls Police Chief John Thum says a new initiative with the helpline center aims to recruit 25 mentors for three Title schools before the end of the year.

Mentors spend about 40 minutes once a week with students, building trust and providing consistent adult support.

Thum says engaging with kids early can positively impact their lives and even help interrupt future criminal justice involvement.

“The impact that has on kids to see them anxiously awaiting the arrival of their mentor in that office. Because you know there are formative relationships that are positively impacting these kids’ lives,” said Thum.
