Talks between Russia and the U.S. on ending the nearly four-year war in Ukraine were productive, but much work remained to be done, according to a senior adviser to President Vladimir Putin.
Yuri Ashakov told reporters on Wednesday that "there was still a lot of work to be done" after five hours of talks in Moscow that began late on Tuesday.
Putin met U.S. President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner in the Kremlin as part of a renewed push by the Trump administration to broker a peace deal.
Ushakov said territorial issues were discussed.
He added that a "compromise" had not yet been found on the issue.
There were other points of disagreement, but Ushakov did not provide further details.
But when pressed about whether peace was closer or further, he said: "Not further, that's for sure."
Asked about a possible meeting between Presidents Putin and Trump, the adviser said it depended on the progress of the peace efforts.
