Calgary firefighters put out a blaze in the Pain Block on Stephen Avenue Walk on Tuesday morning.
The affected structure is the only wooden building downtown to have survived the city's "great fire of 1886."
Fire crews responded just before 9 a.m. to the 100 block of Eighth Avenue S.W., where they saw smoke and flames coming from the back alley side of the two-storey souvenir shop Canadian Impressions.

No one was inside the building at the time of the fire, a release said.
The bulk of the fire damage happened on the back side of the building, facing the alley, according to Alex Kwan, a public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department.
