Breakthrough new vaccine spray could be first to stop spread of deadly whooping cough which sees infants ‘turn blue’
Since the introduction of the whooping cough vaccine in 2012 almost all deaths of infants were born to mothers who were not vaccinated in pregnancy .
Soon the NHS may have another weapon against the dangerous bacterial infection in the form of a nasal spray vaccine which can stop it spreading. Last year saw Britain’s worst outbreak in 40 years and to stop a similar one taking hold the Government has launched a trial of the new vaccine, called BPZE1.
Currently, the NHS offers an injectable vaccine to pregnant women to protect babies in the womb but this cannot stop people from carrying and spreading the bacteria.
