BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —

A new project is planned where a former Birmingham hospital once stood.

The Birmingham City Council has approved rezoning the site of the former Carraway Hospital to a "qualified multiple dwelling district," with a condition to limit the height of structures to 35 feet instead of 65 feet.

According to the city, Phase 1 of the project includes 65 new homes to be built on Carraway Boulevard.

The development is scheduled to be completed by 2027.

City leaders say this is the first construction on the site since the demolition of the hospital in recent years.
