With the final seconds ticking down in the first half on Tuesday night at UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse, Duquesne — after 20 minutes marked by defensive struggles and sluggish offense — had an opportunity to grasp some momentum.
The Dukes trailed William & Mary 48-40, and Tarence Guinyard bounced a pass to a cutting Maximus Edwards. With no protection at the rim, Edwards soared for a two-hand jam. He brought his arms down like hammers... and then the dunk attempt rimmed out.
That about summed up Duquesne’s 83-79 defeat.
William & Mary (8-2) had five double digit scorers and shot 15 of 30 from 3-point range. The Dukes (5-3) battled in the second half and stormed on a 23-4 run to eventually take the lead, but it wasn’t quite enough.
