IOWA CITY, Iowa ( DES MOINES REGISTER ) - The University of Iowa Health Care will pay $4.16 million to settle a lawsuit after a patient suffered a brain injury in the emergency department, according to the Des Moines Register.

The lawsuit filed in 2024 involved 38-year-old Conrad Columbo, who had a history of bipolar and schizoaffective disorder.

In 2022, UIHC placed him in a hallway for about 14 hours due to a lack of psychiatric beds. Columbo told hospital staff that he just got released from jail that morning and went multiple days without sleep or prescription medications.

Columbo became violent and staff restrained and sedated him while he was face-down. Court filings show he went into cardiac arrest and suffered a brain injury.
