WATERLOO, Iowa — Former city council member Steve Schmitt has defeated incumbent council member John Chiles for the Waterloo Ward One City Council seat.
Schmitt won 61 percent of the vote with 1,728 votes, while Chiles took 39 percent with 1,084 votes.
Schmitt served 12 years on the city council, from 2007 to 2019, and emphasized his experience during his campaign and how it could support the relatively new council members.
Schmitt and Chiles were the two candidates that came out of the Waterloo primary election in October. Neither candidate received the necessary 50 percent plus one vote to secure the seat in November, leading to the run-off election.
