YPSILANTI TWP., MI — Ypsilanti Township is asking the state government to take back a $100 million grant from the University of Michigan, saying the school pulled a “bait and switch” about a proposed data center.
“You have to have a place for (data centers), but putting it on farmland, putting it on the banks of the Huron River is disgusting,” Brenda Stumbo, township supervisor, said during a township board meeting Tuesday, Dec. 2.
The Michigan Economic Development Corp. awarded the grant to the University of Michigan on Dec. 10, 2024, giving a $100 million boost to a data center proposed in partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory and slated for Ypsilanti Township.
Now, the township is asking for the state to “cancel, revoke and/or claw back” the money.
