ATLANTA — December 1 is the first day of meteorological winter, and right on cue extreme cold and a powerful winter storm are poised to wreak havoc in the eastern half of the US. Over 70 million Americans are currently under weather advisories.

As the storm pushes out of the plains, messy winter weather will spread across the Southern Plains and Mid-South, with sleet and possible ice developing. Cities like Memphis, Fort Smith and Little Rock could face slick conditions, with interstates including I-29 and I-40 in the crosshairs. Other Southern cities, including Atlanta, will deal with cold rain.
