A sapling grown from the iconic Sycamore Gap tree has found a new home in a North East park.
The tree was planted at Hetton Lyons Country Park as part of the National Trust’s Trees of Hope scheme, which has distributed 49 saplings across the UK to honour the tree felled next to Hadrian’s Wall in Northumberland in September 2023.
Each sapling represents a foot of the tree’s original height, with the one now growing in Sunderland serving as a lasting tribute.
Councillor Lindsey Leonard, cabinet member for environment, transport and net zero at Sunderland City Council, said: "It’s a real honour to plant a sapling grown from the iconic Sycamore Gap tree here at Hetton Lyons Country Park during National Tree Week.
