A rare moment caught on camera is providing a close-up look at the mastery of the element of surprise when a bobcat spots a meal.

A video taken by Joe Genest in Addison County, Vermont, shows a bobcat quietly approaching and eventually pouncing on a squirrel. Wildlife experts say the felines are elusive and use a combination of stealth and patience to sneak up on unsuspecting prey, which is what makes the moment caught on video rare.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife furbearer Brehan Furfey says bobcats are on a mission during these next four months of winter.

“They need to eat two deer, or 60 snowshoe hare, or 3,600 small mammals, or 100-plus squirrels. And so, that is how much they need to survive the winter,” said Furfey.
