The search for British teenager George Smyth, who has been missing for over a week in Romania's Bucegi Mountains, is set to resume today. The 18-year-old from Shropshire disappeared on Sunday, November 23, while hiking alone. George's mother, Jo Smyth, expressed her anguish during an interview with Antena1 TV, stating, "We are hoping and praying he's somehow survived this, against all odds, as the thought of life without him is unbearable." Search efforts were paused for 48 hours due to adverse weather conditions, but local rescue services confirmed they will continue the operation this morning. A spokesperson for the rescue team said, "Because of the weather, we had to call off the search yesterday and today. We searched on Saturday and Sunday, and we will continue tomorrow and the day after. The conditions are extremely difficult, but we are still hoping to find him alive." On the evening he went missing, George made a distress call to emergency services. Jo Smyth recounted, "He left his college in the UK on Sunday, without telling us, to go hiking alone. His phone last had a signal in an isolated area in the mountains. He made a heart-wrenching call to 112 on Sunday evening." His backpack was discovered at the same location from which he called for help. Jo and her family flew to Romania immediately to support the search teams. They are determined to assist in any way possible as the search for George continues.
