CHICAGO (WLS) -- Three people were killed in crashes involving at least four vehicles on I-57 Wednesday, Illinois State Police said.

The crash occurred at about 12:05 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-57 near 119th Street, police said.

Police said there was an initial three-vehicle crash and then a secondary crash occurred when a different vehicle hit three occupants outside of a vehicle from the initial crash.

Police said three people were pronounced dead at the scene and five others transported to hospitals.

The northbound lanes of I-57 were shut down at 127h Street, with traffic being diverted off. All lanes were reopened to traffic shortly before 8 a.m.
