AUGUSTA, Maine (WMTW) - The Trump administration said Tuesday it will begin withholding federal funds for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program from several Democratic-led states, including Maine, unless they turn over additional information about people who receive food assistance.
During a Cabinet meeting, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the cuts will begin next week. States have been told they must provide data on SNAP participants, including names and immigration status.
Rollins said the cooperation is necessary to root out fraud in the program.
More than 150,000 people in Maine receive SNAP benefits. Maine has refused to provide the information and in July joined a lawsuit challenging the federal request.
